| Hoy la policía me paró a la entrada del metro, me pidieron mis documentos, yo ando solamente con una fotocopia de todo, así que se las mostré y me dijeron que tenía que andar trayendo al menos una cosa que fuera original. Los que me pararon fueron la "Guardia de Finanza" que son de uniforme gris (evítenlos si no tienen papeles) y ven lo de delitos económicos y fronteras. | Today the police stopped me at the entrance to the metro, they asked my papers, I am carrying only a photocopy of everything, so I showed it and they told me I have to be carrying at least one original document. Those who stopped me were the "Guardia di Finanza", that use a grey uniform (avoid them if you don't have papers) and deal with economical crimes and immigration. |  |

Something
that concerns me is that I had no explanation for being where
I was, because my official residence is somewhere else and it was too
early to be in a different place. Another thing that worries me is that
today I was about to take all
the clothes of my wife into a bag and

I haven't lost so much my practice, and I had a good time, the park is big so I was able to find a very quiet corner. |  |

was sure that I had left everything very even with the machi

una buena velada. El italiano aún no me resulta, todavía
hay muchas palabras que no entiendo, al menos ya puedo leer el diario,
y entender hablado más o menos 3/4, pero no me siento bien
seguro como para hablar italiano. |
Yesterday
my hosts D. and L. took me and a French friend B. to have
some pizza to a nice place near Campo di Fiori called Acciapafantasma, for narrow, dark
streets which I like. They are very friendly people and we had a great
evening. I still can't express myself in italian, there are many words
I don't get, but at least I can read the newspaper and understand 3/4
of the spoken Italian, but I don't feel confident enough to speak
italian. |

Claro que primero tuve que pasar al banco a sacar dinero y -- horror -- sólo puedo sacar dinero en la sucursal en que abrí la cuenta. Ya a estas alturas no me extraña. | Great! Today in the morning I make the reservation for the apartment in Trastevere, € 250 for the reservation, € 900 monthly. Of course the first thing I had to do was to go to the bank to withdraw money and --horror-- I can only withdraw money from the very branch in which I opened the account. Besides, I discovered that this week is the canonization of Father Hurtado, a Chilean jesuist priest of the mid XX century that worked for the poor, specially children and seniors, and created Chile's biggest charity: the Hogar de Cristo (Christs' Home). So there will be thousands of Chileans in Rome. | |

Something
I find important is that, if there is any Chilean priest
that, based on what he did while alive, deserves to be a saint, that is
Father Hurtado. On the other hand, I do not attribute to sainthood more
than a prize awarded to his memory, because I do not think that in "heaven", given that
here he is declared a saint, he will get a cloud closer to god. |

Today I
went with some doctorate students and postdocs to see Oliver
Twist by Roman Polansky. I liket it very much and I though, once
again, that it is a pity than when
kids we have to read classical literature, because we can
neither appreciate it nor understand it at that age. |

| Le dije al casero que me iría mañana, me voy a un hostel a pasar la noche, no quiero arriesgarme a que no me devuelva los 185 euros que me tiene que devolver de los días no usados. Another
issue that I'm interested in is to know what is going to do Senator Palpatine,
because his predecesor didn't allowed the wife of Chile's president in
the audience; as our president Mr. Lagos is divorced and re-married, so
for the church he is Satan. Furthermore,
and oddly in a conservative country, our president is agnostic, which
means that he considers the question on the existence of god undecidable in our thinking system. (The link

Habían varias banderas del colegio san ignacio, y gente con los uniformes así que me acordé por supuesto del Negro Cofré (un amigo chileno). | In the afternoon I went to a vigil for the canonizacion, it was in the San Ignacio Church, that is besides a Jesuit (?) College. On the way there I met a Chilean actress Patricia Rivadeneira and helped her get there. Hearing
people speking my dialect of Spanish, with the typical expressions of
slang and the accent soft and timid, was certainly an experience, I

| En la mañana fue la canonización del padre Hurtado, junto a otros 4 beati. La delegación chilena era la más numerosa, seguida de la polaca, y luego mucho más atrás, pequeños grupos de "fans" de los otros beati. Era una concentración enorme de gente en la piazza San Pietro, todo lleno de banderas y gente, parecía un estadio de fútbol, sino fuera porque estaba lleno de curas :-) | In the morning it was the canonization of Father Hurtado, along with other 4 beati. The Chilean delegation was the bigger, followed by the Polish one, and farther behind, small groups of "fans" of the other beati. It was a huge concentration of people in piazza San Pietro, everything full of flags and people, it looked like a football stadium, except that it was full of priests :-) |  |

| La misa era en latín, italiano y a ratos en otros idiomas como castellano o polaco. Además el librito de la misa estaba en alemán y tagalog. (La iglesia católica parece muy preocupada en mantener a Filipinas bajo su control.) La gente de Chile reconocía el nombre del padre Alberto/Albertus Hurtado como fuera y aplaudía y gritaba cada vez que lo mencionaban, era bacán. Lamentablemente me tuve que ir antes de tiempo, porque debía tomar un tren hacia Bologna y luego Bertinoro, pero alcancé a ver el instante preciso en que Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga se convertía en Santo, con un escueto "Dicernimus" ("lo ordenamos") del Papa. | The mass was in Latin, Italian, and sometimes in other languages such as Spanish or Polish. Also, the mass-book was in German and Tagalog. (The Catholic church seems very concerned with keeping the Phillipines under its control.) The people from Chile recognized the name of father Alberto/Albertus Hurtado however, and they were clapping and cheering every time they mentioned him, it was great. Sadly, I had to go before the ceremony ended, as I had a train to catch towards Bologna and Bertinoro, but I was able to see the precise moment where Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga was turned into a saint, with a brief "Dicernimus" ("we order it") from the Pope. |  |

| Bertinoro es un pequeño pueblo en una colina de unos 300m; en la cima de esa colina hay un monasterio abandonado, que la iglesia cedió a una universidad para ser reparado y convertido en centro de convenciones y museo religioso. La semana pasada uno de los profesores que me recibe me invitó a que fuera a un encuentro sobre Data Minning en este lugar, al que ya vine el año pasado a una escuela de verano sobre Recuperación de Información. | Bertinoro is a small town in a 300m-high hill. On the hilltop, there is an abandoned monastery, that the church ceded to a university to be repaired and converted into a convention center and a religious museum. Last week one of my host professors invited me to go to a gathering on Data Minning in that place. I already have been here, last year I came to a summer school on Information Retrieval. |  |

encuentro es, de alguna manera, el extremo opuesto: una reunión
de pesos pesados del área, con varias ponencias, sin un programa
rígido sino más bien con discusiones conforme se iban
dando los temas. A pesar de la informalidad de la organización,
salió bastante bien y se dio una discusión super
interesante en varios temas. Yo me
sentía ahí bastante raro al principio, hasta un poco
incómodo pero a pesar de ser yo bastante "nuevo" me incorporaron

workshop is, in a certain way, the opposite end: a meeting of
heavyweights, with several talks, no set program but rather discussion
as topics are appearing. Despite the informality of the organization,
it
worked very well and the discussion was very interesting on several
topics. I felt rather weird at the
beginning, a bit uncomfortable but despite me being rather "new", they
received me very well. |

night we had "priest-stranglers",
thick noodles that are called "strozzapretti" in Italian. When the
dinnner was over, the cook showed up in the dinning room and we all
congratulate her, and she said that at their restaurant they make very
good "strozzapretti" because they are communists :-) |

I still

básico de la supervivencia en Roma saber tomar desayuno. El desayuno típico es un café
y un croissant.
El café puede ser "expresso" (un café corto muy
concentrado y rico),
"maquiatto" (café cortado/tallat) o "capuccino" (café con
crema leche
espumante encima), además de otras variedades menores. El
típico café
que se toma en Chile y en EEUU con mucha agua se puede pedir como
"café
americano" y si el mesero no lo entiende "café americano, un
café con
molta acqua". Yo siempre pido en la mañana "un capuccino e un
cornetto". Si lo necesitan alguna vez, los plurales de estas cosas son
la misma palabra terminada en "i", ejemplo: "due capuccini". |
It is
basic to survival in Rome to know how to take breakfast. Typical breakfast is a coffee and a
croaissant ("cornetto").
Coffee can be "expresso" (a short, very thick coffee), "maquiatto" (a
coffe with some milk) or "capuccino" (a coffee with milk "foam"),
besides other minor varieties. The typical coffee of the Americas (both
north and south), with a lot of water, is understood by bartenders if
you ask for a "cafe americano", and if they don't understand try "cafe

"un capuccino e un cornetto". If you ever need the plural, in general

Nobody told the safe at the bank that the
daylight saving time was over, so it remained stuttbornly closed for an
hour after they opened the bank, and there was a long queue of people
:-( I made a rather large bank transfer to Chile and they
didn't ask me my passport not any document, not even for withdrawing
money, because the guy at the bank already knows me. |

Here to everyone with a
university diploma they say "Dottore" (Doctor) as in Colombia,
without
the need of being a Medical Doctor nor a PhD. I thought it was just a
bad custom, but it seems that it goes further: the title the UniMilano

In the Filmstudio 2 theater in Trastevere, there
was a festival of short films made by young directors. I thought
there will be more people but we were only 4 in the room; the short
films were excellent, there were some Canadian stuff in the line of
McLaren (Flux by Chris Hinton), a few very funny and others that were
definitively the result of a good dose of mescaline (as the first thing
in the morning). |

| De ida pasamos por Ronciglione, una ciudad muy bonita en una colina, construída con una piedra gris que en Italiano se llama Peperino. Pienso que en muchos otros lugares del mundo, una ciudad así de bonita sería un gran atractivo turístico, pero acá en Italia es solamente una nota al pie en el mapa turístico de la zona de Lazio (el estado donde está Roma). | On the way there we went through Ronciglioni, a very pretty city in a hill, built using a grey stone that is called Peperino in Italian I think that in many other places in the world, a city as pretty as Ronciglioni would be a big tourist attraction, but here in Italy it seems to be a footnote of the touristic map of Lazio (the state where Rome is). |  |

probé el finoccio, una especie de cebolla con gusto a
anís muy rica y el broche de oro, una botella de vino

lunch was excellent, the main course were Funghi Porcini, that are gigantic
mushrooms, some of them of the size of a hand and very tasty, and, by
the way, you don't wash them but brush them to take the soil out,
because if you wash them with water they get softer and loose some
flavor. I also tasted finoccio, a kind of onion that tasted like anis,
very interesting and we also had a bottle of rosse wine from the '97
that C.'s father opened for the ocasion. |

al Hostel Positano, que también tenía piezas colectivas a
15 euros, claro que en este caso había 1 baño y una ducha
para 30 personas (5 habitaciones con 6 camas cada una). |

night we arrived pretty late to Termini, I decided to try if I was
lucky with the hostel, that almost always have some available rooms,
but today was not my day, so I was
bouncing from hostel to hostel until 1.30, when I finally god a
bed in Hostel Positano, big rooms at 15 euros, but in this case 1
bathroom for 30 persons (5 rooms of 6 beds each per floor). |

streets, I find it very strange that
it gets dark so, so early. At 17.30 it is already night. It is
weird, at this time I felt like going to bed to sleep, in fact I would
do it ... If I didn't know that doing so means waking up at midnight,
not being able to sleep more :-) So I stayed in the center, I saw
"Corpse Bride", naturally in English with Italian subtitles (which is

Para mí no es problema, el problema es que son dos besos, no
sé si los dan o no de verdad o solo ponen la cara (en Chile a
mis amigos que saludo de beso les DOY un beso no les pongo la mejilla
contra su mejilla), y los dan en el orden inverso que en España:
primero la mejilla izquierda, luego la derecha. |

problem is that they are two kisses, that I don't know if they give the
kisses of they just put the face (in Chile to my friends(men) that I

muchas palabras italianas que se
escriben y pronuncian (correctamente!)
como en inglés: por ejemplo "privacy", "budget" y
"computer".
También es un detalle un poco raro que muchas abreviaturas son
una palabra y se ponen en minúscula, como "ong", y si comienzan
una frase, sólo la primera en mayúscula, como "Ue"
(unión europea). Como en castellano (y a diferencia del
inglés), los gentilicios se escriben en minúscula, como
"italiano". Lamentablemente, no descubrieron la belleza del
interrogativo inverso para comenzar una frase interrogativa ... al
parecer eso es exclusivamente castellano. |
There
are many Italian words that are

invitó de nuevo a casa de C. y acepté por supuesto. Lo
pasamos muy bien, ahora conocí a los amigos de ellos que son un
grupo de parapentistas, son muy simpáticos. Hoy sí
pudimos trabajar y recoger montones de aceitunas, unas 20 cajas. Por
supuesto la comida fue increíble abundante y rica y pude probar
la POLENTA (chuchoca) como la
preparan los italianos, ¡genial! |
A.
invited me again to C.'s and I gladly accepted. We had a great time, I
met their friends, a group of paraglider fans, very nice. Today we were
able to work a lot and harvest lots of olives, about 20 boxes. Of
course the food was incredible abundant and excellent and I was able to
try the POLENTA (we call it
chuchoca in Chile) the way Italians prepare it. Great! |

| En el camino de vuelta desde las termas de Bagniaccio, al medio de la carretera había una liebre tendida en el piso. Nosotros le hicimos el quite, el auto de atrás (en el que venían también amigos de A. y C.) paró y la recogieron, tenía un golpe muy feo en la cabeza y estaba muy atontada, pero todavía estaba viva, así que la llevamos a la casa de los papás de C. Dos días más tarde la liebre se recuperó y se escapó de vuelta al bosque :-) | On the way back from Bagniaccio, in the middle of the road there was a hare lying on the pavement. We avoided running over her, and the car behind us (of friends of A. and C.) stopped and they picked her up, she had a nasty wound in the head and was quite shocked, but she was still alive, so we take her to C.'s parents. Two days after the hare recovered and escaped back to the woods :-) | |

Hostel,
absolutamente recomendable, es muy grande, buena onda,
seguro, limpio y tiene muchas duchas así que no hay que hacer
cola. Muy bueno. |

moved to the best hostel I've found
in Rome: the Yellow Hostel, absolutely recommendable, it
is very big, great atmosphere, safe, clean and it has a lot of showers
so there's no need to queue in the morning. Very good. |

además de comida de verdad. Si
estás aburrido de la pizza aquí se puede comer por unos
5-6 euros y es muy bueno. Hablan inglés. |

| Bueno, hoy fui a pagar el
arriendo del departamento ... estaba super nervioso porque pagué
tres meses de una vez en efectivo y me pareció que era mucha
plata ... pero el Domingo me cambio. En 3 semanas más llega mi
mamá y mi hermana y mi sobrino, en 1 mes más mi hermano y
Fabiola, en 4 semanas más un amigo, luego viene navidad,
año nuevo, un par de semanas de vacaciones. Por ahora, el primer
paso, después de 50 días viviendo en hosteles, quiero
finalmente llegar a mi departamento. Eso será en el próximo reporte de viaje ... |
Well, today I
went to pay the rent of the apartment ... I was very nervous because I
paid for several months in cash ... but I'll be moving on Sunday. In 3
more
weeks my mother and my sister and my nephew. In 1 month my brother and
Fabiola, in 4 more weeks a friend, then christmas, new year, a couple
of weeks of vacations. For now, the first step, after 50 days living in
hostels, I just want to get to my apartment. That will be in the next travel report ... |
