Para llegar a Roma, como llevaba mucho equipaje, tomé el Ferry de Grimaldi, que es muy barato - € 49 y que permite llevar mucho más peso que un avión, en la p'ractica todo el peso que uno pueda razonablemente cargar.	To get to Rome, as I was carrying too much luggage, I took Grimaldi's Ferry which is very cheap - € 49 and allows one to carry much more weight than in a plane, in practice, almost all the weight you can reasonably carry.
Me preparé para un viaje en un bote de quinta clase, me llevé una chaqueta por si se colaba el frío, un gorro, unos sandwiches y una botella de agua. La cuestión era un hotel flotante, con dos bares, restaurant, casino y piscina. OK. Un pequeño error de juicio.	I prepared myself for a trip in a fifth-class boat, so I took a jacket in case the wind blows through holes in the cabin, some sandwiches and a bottle of water. The boat was a floating hotel with two bars, a restaurant, casino and a pool. OK. Just a slight error of judgement.
El viaje tomó 20 horas y fue bastante cómodo, la sala de "poltronas" (sofás) era muy espaciosa. Lo mejor: que al llegar F. de la uniroma estaba esperándome, porque el puerto quedaba lejísimos de la estación de tren, hubiera tenido que caminar un montón y no estaba bien señalizado, me hubiera tomado un par de horas llegar a la estación de tren y con las dos maletas hubiera llegado muerto.	The trip took 20 hours and was very comfortable. The room of "poltronas" (sofas) was very big. The best thing, on arrival F. from the University was waiting for me, because the port was very far from the train station, I should have had to walk a lot and there were no sign pointing to the train station, it would have take me a couple of hours to get there and with my luggage I would have been arrived there dead.
Por la tarde-noche llegué en tren a Termini (€ 4 el viaje), la estación de trenes de roma, y al hostal, que resultó ser el peor lugar del mundo: Hostal Papavero € 30, fatal. Me atendieron pésimo y pasé harto frío.	In the evening I took the tren to Termini (€ 4), the train station of Rome, and to the hostel, that turned out to be the worst place in the world: Hotel Papavero € 30, really fatal. The staff was very rude, the place was small and it was cold at night.
En la noche en metro (€ 1 por viaje) a un internet café que conocía en piazza Barberini (€ 2.25 la hora) y al primer shock cultural y es que me pidieron el pasaporte para poder entrar. Después a un bar de negros, en que me resultó divertido que me sentí demasiado blanco (por primera vez en mi vida!) y me tomé 66cl de Peroni (€ 2.5) mientras repasaba mis notas del día.	In the night a metro (€ 1 per trip) to an Internet Cafe I knew in Piazza Barberini (€ 2.25 per hour) and the first cultural shock was that I was requested a passport to be able to surf the web. After that to a bar of black people, in which it was fun that I felt too white (for the first time in my life!) and I took 66cl of Peroni (€ 2.25) while I was going through my notes for the day.
Trato de concentrarme en no hacerme una primera impresión de Roma aún, en demorarlo y darle el beneficio del tiempo, porque cuando llegamos de Lisboa a Barcelona con Fabiola fue fatal, y ahora también está siendo horrible, pero no hay que juzgar una ciudad por cómo se siente con dos maletas de 30 kg de noche transpirado, de noche, sin conocer el idioma y sin tener un lugar donde vivir.	I try to focus in not having a first impression of Rome yet, in taking more time and give it the benefit of time, because when we arrived from Lisbon to Barcelona with Fabiola it was awful, and now it's being horrible, but I think it's wrong to judge a city on how it feels with two 30-kg suitcases at night, sweatty without knowing the language and without having a place to live.
Cuando era pequeño odiaba viajar, pero me gustaba estar en distintos lugares, ahora sigo igual, me estresa andar con maletas, llegar a un hotel, siempre me parece demasiado caro pagar € 50 por una noche.	When I was a kid I hated to travel, but I liked to be in different places, now I am still like that, walking with my baggage stresses me, going to a hotel, it allways seems expensive to me to pay € 50 for a night.
Ahora hay que poner buena cara y abrir la mente y el espíritu a esta nueva ciudad, a esta gente amable, porque eso sí, quienes me recibieron han sido muy amables conmigo. Así también fue en Pisa, Y no es que los italianos usen la zalamería de hacerte sentir importante, es más bien una empatía real y ganas de que uno se sienta bien.	Now I have to show a good face and to open mind and spirit to this new city, to this kind people, because that's for sure, the people who received me have been very kind. That's the way it was in Pisa, and I'm not talking about Italian people trying to make you feel important, but rather about real empathy and desire of making you feel comfortable.
Lunes 3 de Octubre del 2005
Por la mañana llegué a la universidad, llevé mis dos maletas a la oficina. Me asignaron un puesto de trabajo y tendré unos pocos días para habituarme. También pude responder a la gran interrogante que traía, y es que mi advisor y mi coadvisor son matemáticos más bien teóricos, y yo soy más de un perfil ingenieril, más aplicado y menos teórico, me dijeron que no importa, que eso es lo que ellos quieren. Perfecto.	In the morning I arrived to the university, I took both suitcases to the office. I was assigned a desk and I will have a few days to get used to the environment. I was also able to answer the great question I had and was that both my advisor and coadvisor are rather theoretical guys, and I have a more engineering profile, more applied and less theoretical. They told me it doesn't matter, that's what they want. Perfect.
Reservé en M-J hostel, genial, por la misma plata (€ 15-22 por una cama en habitación compartida) pero es un lugar más amplio, más limpio, con más onda, con gente más amable, con frazada y desayuno gratis y muy cerca de Termini y de la universidad. Pertenece a un grupo con sitio en HostelInItaly.it, que incluye un hotel en Venezia muy cerca de Rialto. Nota: después encontré un hotel aún mejor: Yellow Hostel, intenta primero en el Yellow Hostel y si no tienen camas, el M-J hostel también es bueno.	I made a reservation at M-J hostel, great, for the same money (€ 22 for a bed in shared room) but it's a larger place, cleaner, with more atmosphere, with better staff, with free breakfast and very close to Termini and to the university. It belongs to a group with a site in hostelinitaly.it that includes a hotel in Venezia near Rialto. Note: afterwards I found an even better hostel: Yellow Hostel, try first in Yellow Hostel and if they don't have beds, the M-H hostel is also good.
Por la noche comí un montón, como medio kilo de pizza por cortes (€ 6, pero podía haber sobrevivido con € 3) y en la estación me tomé un te y fui feliz. Termini es como el terminal de autobuses sur, con sus alrededores turbios, llenos de pobreza (inmigrantes). No se ve mucha prostutición abiertamente.	In the night I ate a lot, like half a kilogram of pizza that is sold by weight (€ 6, but I could have survived with € 3) and in the station I took a tea and I was happy. Termini is like the bus terminal in Santiago de Chile, with their dark surroundings, fulls of poverty (immigrants). There is not much prostitution, at least not publicly displayed.
Hoy me di cuenta de algo de ser adulto jóven, y es que aún me siento adolescente, demasiado pequeño para lo que tengo que hacer, como si las responsabilidades de la adultez me quedaran grandes. Pero sé, porque lo he vivido, que es una ilusión, que las cosas no quedan grandes, que basta con hacer las cosas una vez y uno aprende, que después de la primera vez que uno ha hecho algo, es infinitamente más fácil.	Today I realized something about being a young adult, and it's that I still feel like a teenager, too little to what I have to do, like if the responsabilities of being a grown-up are too big for me. But I know, because I have lived it, that this is an illusion, that things are not too big, that it's enough with making things once and you learn, that after the first time you've something, it gets much more easy.
Al comienzo de "Entrevista con un Vampiro", Louis describe su último año como mortal, en que tenía 28 años, y dice "pero esa era otra época, y a los 28 años, yo ya era un hombre". Eso espero de mí -- en parte, porque en parte también quiero disfrutar del tener pocas responsabilidades por ahora (por ejemplo, gente cuyos vidas o salarios dependan de mí); miro el trabajo de G.N. y el de R.B. y pienso que es ineludible ir tomando más responsabilidades.	At the begining of "An Interview with a Vampire", Louis describes his last year as a mortal, in which he was 28 years old, and he said "but that was a different time, and at that age, I was already a man". That's whay I hope for me -- in part, because in part I also want to enjoy having not many responsabilities (for instance, people whose lives or salaries depend on me): I look to the job that G.N. and R.B. do and I think that you cannot avoid accepting more responsabilities over time.
Algo raro que me está pasando es que tengo ganas de hablar catalá ahora, porque al menos es una lengua que entiendo más. Hasta me siento cómodo hablando en inglés. No debo cerrarme al idioma. Extrañamente (y siempre me pasa), cuando escucho gente hablando en castellano me quedo callado, y hablo en inglés con la otra gente. No sé todavía por qué, o tal vez si sé, pero no quiero reconocerlo.	Something weird that is happening to me is that I want more to speak catalan now, because it is at least a language I understand. I feel even more comfortable speaking english. I must not close myself to the language. Strangely (and this happens me all the time), when I hear people speaking in Spanish I remain silent, and I speak in English with other people. I still don't know why, or maybe I do know, but I don't want to admit it.

Ayer tuve una pequeña iluminación. Uno de los 8 que están en la pieza es un holandés recién jubilado que está viajando por Italia como una forma de "desconectarse" de su pasado laboral. Estuvimos conversando mucho rato de un montón de cosas. Me dijo que él pensaba que la vida tenía tres partes. La primera etapa, en la que estoy yo, es la etapa de los "sueños". La segunda etapa, que él acaba de completar, es la etapa de las "responsabilidades". La tercera etapa, él quiere descubrir de qué se trata.	Yesterday I had this little illumination. One of the 8 people sleeping in the room is a Dutch that has just retired and is traveling through Italy as a way of "disconnecting" from his past. We were talking a long time about a lot of things. He told me that he thinked that life has threeparts. The first step, in which I am, is the step of "dreams". the second step, that he has just completed, is the stage of "responsabilities". And the third step, he wants to discover what it's about.
Yo lo pensé un rato y le dije, quizás es la etapa de los "sueños", de nuevo. Y creo que le hizo mucho sentido.	I thought about this for a while and I told him, may be it's the stage of "dreams", again. And I think it maked sense for him.
Me dediqué al papeleo hoy día. Ya tengo mi seguro laboral que me pide la universidad (€ 50, asegurado hasta 25.000 euros por incapacidad o muerte, AMC/AXXA seguros), y un seguro médico que me piden para el permesso de soggiorno (€ 78 al año en ASSITALIA, sólo urgencias). Este último seguro es interesante porque es un seguro para atenderse en hospitales públicos, y el hospital contacta directamente a la aseguradora. Eso es lo estándar para los estudiantes extranjeros extracomunitarios.	I made a lot of paperwork today. Now I have a worker's insurance requested by university (€ 50, up to 25,000 euros for incapacity or death, AMC/AXXA insurance), and a medical insurance that is requested for the permesso de soggiorno (€ 78 per year in ASSITALIA, only urgent stuff). This last insurance is interesting because it is to be admitted into public hospitals, and the hospital contacts directly to the insurance company. This is standard for foreing extracomunitary students.
Los semáforos peatonales son muy cortos, marcan el verde 1 segundo y luego pasan a amarillo. Ademas, hay pocos y normalmente para cruzar hay que juntar un grupo de gente y atreverse. La ciudad es difícil de recorrer a pie, difícil de recorrer en auto, en metro, en bicicleta, etc. El transporte es horrible. Calma ChaTo calma.	Traffic lights for pedrestrians are very short, they are green for 1 second and after that, yellow. Besides, there are only a few and to cross the street, you have usually to gather a group of people and be bold. In this city is hard to move by foot, it's hard to move by car, in metro, by bike, etc. Transportation is horrible. Calm down ChaTo, calm down.
La gente italiana me gusta, son amables, cercanos y se puede conversar con ellos. Pero su organización no me gusta, la encuentro nefasta, policial, retrógrada. La política es más circense que en España, los períodicos tendenciosos, la televisión es 101% basura, suma y sigue. Pero los italianos son geniales. Creo que me pasó lo mismo en Argentina. También admiro mucho a los argentinos, pero creo que votan con el orto y se organizan políticamente peor aún. Una de mis principales tareas este año será descubrir por qué hay esa distancia entre individuos creativos, inteligentes y educados, y estados burocráticos, atontantes y brutos.	I like Italian people, they are very gentle, warm and you can talk with them. But I don't like the way they organize, I find it nefast, like a policial state, retrograde. Politics is even more a circus than in spain, newspapers are very skewed, TV is 101% garbage, and so on. But Italians are great. I think the same happened to me in Argentina. I admire Argentinians, but I think they vote with their butts and they are politically organized even worse. One of my tasks this year is to discover why there is this distance between individuals who are creative, smart and well educated, and states that are bureaucratic, dumb and brute.
Anoche también encontré casa, y hoy me mudé. Es un departamento compartido con el dueño de casa y con una estudiante. Me cuesta € 500 al mes, queda relativamente cerca de la U y la habitación es grande, y la casa se ve limpia. ¿El problema? El dueño no nos da la llave de la casa, pero se compromete a abrir a cualquier hora. Veamos si cumple su palabra, yo por salud mental no seguiré buscando casa de inmediato, terminaré mis trámites, le daré dos semanas a esto, y después veré.	Last night I found a home, and today I moved in. It's a shared apt. with the owner of the place and a student. It costs me € 500 per month and it's relatively close to the university and the room is big and the house looks clean. The problem? The owner doesn't give us the key, but he promises to open at any time. Let's see if he holds on to his word, I for mental health won't be searching house immediattly, I will end my paperwork, give this stuff a cuple of weeks, and then we'll see.

Me levanté a las 6.00 de la mañana para ir a inmigración, que ahora para "resolver" el problema de las largas colas, consiste en una larga cola en las afueras de Roma. Primero un metro hasta la última estación de una línea, luego un bus (del que me bajé antes de tiempo), así que tuve que caminar unos 30 minutos más o menos por una zona que era campo-campo, sin ninguna casa.	I got up at 6.00 am for going to immigration, which now to "solve" the issue of long queues, consists in long queue outside Rome. First the subway untill the last station of one line, then a bus (which I left too early) so I had to walk for at least half an hour in a zone that looked like countryside, without any house.
Igual llegué a las 7.30, una hora antes de que abrieran, así que me atendieron de los primeros. Está de más decir que no en todos los países el hacer cola es parte de la cultura, así que se formó un tremendo montón en la puerta y al abrir la reja todos corrían para formarse en el patio de la prefectura.	I got there at 7.30am anyways, one hour before they open, so I was one of the first. It is not necessary to tell that in not all countries queueing is part of the culture, so a big mess of people was at the gate when they opened and everybody ran to stand in line in the yard of the prefecture.
Bueno, lo que conseguí averigurar fue primero, que no era ahí donde tenía que pedir el permiso de residencia, sino en la comisaría más cercana a mi domicilio. En la prefectura sólo se tramitan los visados de los estudiantes de Erasmus, lo que es tremendamente paradójico porque Erasmus es una beca europea y ellos no hacen tramites de visado porque no lo necesitan. Además, habán 300 personas más pidiendo un visado de "turista".	Well, what I found out was first, that it wasn't there where I should get my resident permit, but in the nearest police station to my house. In the prefecture they only do student visas for Erasmus, which is paradoxical, because Erasmus is an European scholarship and Europeans do not need visas. Besides, there where other 300 persons asking for a "tourist" (with quotes) visa.
Lo segundo que averigue es que una nueva ley, muy reciente, parte de la "guerra contra el terrorismo" (traducción: "guerra contra los extranjeros") necesitamos ahora que el dueño de la casa donde vivimos haga una declaración escrita en la comisaría diciendo que nos está alojando. Este es un requerimiento extra que no existía antes. Y cualquier extranjero, si vienes desde U.S.A. a la casa de un amigo en Italia, el tiene que ir a la policía a decir que está alojando a un ciudadano de U.S.A.	The second thing I found out is that due to a new law, very recent and part of the "war on terrorism" (or rather, "war on immigrants") is that we need now that the owner of the house we live in makes a written statement at the nearest police station saying that he is receiving an foreinger. This is an extra requirement that didn't existed before. And any foreinger, so if you come from the States to the house of your friend in Italy, he has to go to the police station and declare that he is receiving an alien at his house.
Le pedí a mi casero y obviamente me mandó a la chucha, así que le pedí a una amiga acá que declarara que ella me estaba dando alojamiento. Fue muy amable y fue y pidió el documento y todo. Con eso mañana haré el trámite del permiso de residencia, claro que al otro lado de la ciudad.	I asked the landlord at my place and he obviously sent me to hell, so I asked a friend of mine D. who lives here to declare that she was receiving me. She was very kind and got the document for me and everything. Whith that I have to go tomorrow to do ask for the resident permit, to another part of the city.
En el trabajo, ayer pude terminar algo y hoy pude empezar otra cosa. Estas semanas trabajaré más o menos independiente, terminando unos proyectos que me quedan del trabajo anterior. Es interesante, es un estudio sobre cercanía entre países de Europa, pero en términos de con quiénes tienen más relación, algo así como una relación de segundo orden.	At work, yesterday I was able to finish something and today I will start something else. These weeks I'll be working mostly independently, finishing some projects from my postdoc at Barcelona. This is interesting, it's a study about closeness between countries in europe, but in terms of which countries they are related to, something like a second-order relationship.
Bueno, esta primera semana está siendo casi exclusivamente trámites de inmigración. Si un año tiene 52 semanas, esto significa que se me fue el 2% del tiempo en trámites migratorios.	Well, this week is being mostly immigration paperwork. If a year has 52 weeks, this means that I lost 2% of the time in immigration paperwork.
Una vez que llegas a italia con tu flamante visado de estudios (que en la práctica a nosotros no nos sirve de nada, el visado es sólo para entrar al país, no para quedarse). Hay que pedir dentro de 8 días hábiles el permiso de residencia de estudiante:	Once you get to italy with your study visa (which in practice means anything, because the visa is to enter the country only), you have 8 working days to ask for a resident permit as student:
Necesitas 5 fotos carnet Certificado de tener una beca (timbrado por quienes te dieron el visado para entrar a Italia) + 2 Fotocopias Certificado del seguro de salud + 2 Fotocopias Certificado de que alguien te recibe (Comunica di Cessione di Fabbricato dal titolare del appartamento) + 2 Fotocopias Formulario que te entregan alla - Unos 14,62 euros (siempre va subiendo) en estampillas que se compran en los puestos de tabaco Pasaporte con visado + 2 Fotocopias de la pagina de la foto y de la pagina del visado Pasaje con el que llegaste + 2 Fotocopias del pasaje (a menos que tengas estampada tu fecha de entrada en el pasaporte)	You need 5 photos Certificate of the scholarship (stamped by the italian consulate when you asked for the visa) + 2 photocopies Health insurance + 2 photocopies Certificate that someone is receiving you (Comunica di Cessione di Fabbricato dal titolare del appartamento) + 2 photocopies A form that they give you there About 14,62 euros in stamps that you buy at the tobacco shops Passport with the visa + 2 photocopies of the page with the photo and the page with the visa The ticket (airplane/boat/bus) of how you got there + 2 photocopies (unless you have a stamp with your entry date in your passport)
Y se pide el permiso en el Comisariato más cercano a tu domicilio.	And this is requested in the nearest police station to your home.
Recién el dueño de casa vino y me pidió una copia de mi pasaporte. Fui extremadamente gentil con él, y le mostré todos mis papeles para tranquilizarlo. Para tranquilizarme ocupo la técnica ChaTo de asumir que la otra persona es una gran persona aunque aún no haya dado muestras de ello. Siempre que voy por la calle hago eso cuando me encuentro con alguien: pienso que es alguien interesante, que seguramente es muy amigo de sus amigos, que lee mucho, o que sabe tocar la guitarra, o cualquier cosa	The owner of the house (is this "landlord" in English?) came and asked me a photocopy of my passport. I was extremely gentle with him, and I showed hiim all my papers to calm him. To calm myself, I use ChaTo's technique of assuming that the other person is a great person even if he hasn't showed this so far. Whenever I go in the street I do that if I find somebody: I think s/he is somebody interesting, probably a great friend of his friends, or a person that reads a lot, or that play guitar, or anything.
Me invento un cuento para que la pesona que voy conociendo me caiga bien de entrada. Normalmente eso es más justo que asumir que todos son una mierda, porque no es así.	I tell myself a story so the person I am knowing seems more interesting from the beginning. Normally, this is more fair than assuming everybody is worth a shit, because that is not true.
Viernes 7 de Octubre del 2005
A las 8.00 de la mañana en punto estaba en el comisariato, junto con una discreta fila de otras 18 personas. Estaba lloviendo y habían dos filas: una de Italianos que venían a hacer algún trámite, ellos estaban en el alero de la comisaría, adentro de la reja, y otra de inmigrantes afuera de la comisaría en la reja, en la lluvia. A las 8.30 que abrian aparecio un tipo de la comisaría y empezó a repartir números, pero habíamos 19 personas. Nos preguntó a los dos últimos qué necesitabamos y ambos le hablamos de nuestra urgencia y el nos hizo pasar, pero nos dijo que no garantizaba que nos pudieran atender.	At 8.00am sharp I was in the police station, with a small queue of 18 persons. It was raining and there were two queues: one of italians that came to do something, they were inside the fence, protected by the roof of the police station, and another queue of immigrants outside the fence, in the rain. At 8.30 a guy from the station went out and started to give numbers, but we were 19 persons. He asked the last two what do we need and he allowed us to go in, but he told us he does not guarantee that they will see us.
Lo que siguió fueron 4 horas esperando sin saber si me iban a atender o no.	What followed was four hours waiting without knowing if they were going to receive me or not.
A las 12.10 (cerraban a las 12.30) pude pasar, y ya estaban apagando los computadores y armando todo para irse, y diciendo que sólo se atendían 18 personas por día. El tipo que no me habia dado el número me dijo que volviera en la tarde a las 15.00 y me dió un papel para que el guardia me dejara pasar. En la tarde atienden de 15.00 a 18.00 pero solo para consultas.	At 12.10 (they closed at 12.30) I was able to go in, and they were shutting down the computers and preparing everything to go, and saying that they only receive 18 persons per day. The guy who didn't gave me a number told me to return in the afternoon at 15.00 and gave me a piece of paper so the guard allowed me in. In the afternoon they receive you from 15.00 to 18.00 but only for questions.
Fui a Termini, comí, respondí mail, volví a las 15.00 en punto, ellos llegaron a las 15.20. El trámite de recibir mi documentación duró dos horas, e incluyó una consulta a un libro guatón que tenían con las leyes, para ver qué pasaba con un Chileno residente en España, además de una toma de huellas de todos los dedos y de las palmas de las manos. Al menos no me pidieron una radiografía de tórax y una muestra de sangre como en España.	I went to Termini, I ate, replied e-mail, went back at 15.00 sharp, they arrived at 15.20. The paperwork of receiving my documentation lasted two hours, and included querying a large book with the laws to see what happens with a Chilean which is resident in Spain, and a fingerprint of fingertips, fingers, and the palm of the hand. At least they didn't ask me for a chest X-ray and a blood sample as in Spain.
Me dieron un recibo y me dijeron, que en Italia las cosas no funcionaban tan bien como en España, y que ellos se demoraban entre 3 y 4 meses, y que fuera para navidad. Les conté que quería reagruparme con la Fabi y me dieron indicaciones y me dijeron que si tenía suerte se demorarían solo 2 meses en tenerme el permiso de residencia. Salí de ahí a las 17.30.	They gave me a receipt and they told me that in Italy things do run as smoothly as in Spain and that they took between 3 and 4 months, and that I should go by christmas to see if they have my papers. I told them that I wanted to live with my wife and they gave me some directions and they told me that if I was lucky they will take only two months in having my resident permit. I left there at 17.30.
De vuelta pasé al supermercado, que resultó ser carísimo, pero claro, parece que escogí un supermercado particularmente caro, acá en la casa me dieron la dirección de una lavandería para mañana y de un supermercado más económico.	On the way back home I went to the supermarket, that turned out to be very expensive, but, of course, it seems that I picked a particulary expensive supermarket, here at home they gave me the address of a laundry for tomorrow and of a cheaper supermarket.

Llegando a casa, la chica que vive en la casa estaba cocinando para ella y el casero, así que estuve leyendo un rato y cuando terminó de cocinar y se llevó los platos a la pieza y yo salí a prepararme algo de cenar. Llegó apenas me sintió entrar a la cocina y me dijo que esperara hasta las 20.00, que ellos cenaban de 19.30 a 20.00 y que después de cenar ella tenía que lavar los platos y dejar la cocina limpia antes de que yo empezara; yo le dije que había espacio para los dos y ella me dijo que no, que la cocina era muy pequeña (no lo es).	When I got home, the girl that lives in the house was cooking for her and the landlord, so I was reading for a while and when she finished cooking and took the plates to the bedroom y went out to fix myself something for dinner. Así que esperé pacientemente y cuando empecé a cocinar me dijo que tenía que comer en la cocina porque si comía en la pieza llegaban cucarachas (comprensible) y que desocupara la cocina a las 21.00 porque al casero le molesta el olor a comida en la noche. Para recuperar algo de tiempo me fui a la U en la mañana temprano y estuve allá en la mañana, igual pude avanzar bastante y desconectarme de la onda burocrática.	To recover some of the time lost, I went to the University early in the morning and I was there in till noon, I was able to catch up with some work and keep my mind far from the bureaucracy.
En la tarde llevé mi ropa a lavar y secar a una lavandería (€ 7.5, y me entregaron la ropa doblada). Cuando llegué el tipo que estaba ahí, un negro muy simpático, me preguntó de donde era, yo le dije que de Chile y él no sabía donde quedaba, le dije que en Sudamérica. Cuando fui a buscar mi ropa estaba en una bolsa con un sticker que decía "S.A.". Lo encontré chistoso.	In the afternoon I took my clothes to wash and dry to the laundry (€ 7.5). When I arrived there the guy that was there, a very friendly black guy, asked me where I was from, and I told him from Chile and he didn't know where it was, I told him in Southamerica. When I went to pick my clothes they were in a bag with a sticker that says "S. A.". I found that funny.
Luego volví a casa y el dueño de casa había sacado el papel higiénico que puse en el baño (porque él sacó el suyo cuando yo llegué, así que yo compré y traje a la casa) y lo había dejado sobre mi escritorio en mi pieza. Le dije que me parecía muy raro, que yo había comprado cuatro rollos y se los podía dar y los ibamos poniendo en el baño hasta que se acabaran. Me preguntó si acaso no teníamos reglas higiénicas en Chile. Le respondí que sí teníamos, pero que esto no era un camping donde tengo que ir al baño con mi papel. Después de un tira y afloja logré ganar el derecho a poner mi rollo de papel sobre una repisita en el baño.	I told him that was weird, that I had bought four rolls and that I can give them to him and we can place them in the bathroom. He asked me if in Chile we don't have higienic rules. I asked that we do have, but that this was not a camping where I have to go to the bathroom with my roll of paper. After a though negotiation I earned the right to place my roll of paper over a small bench in the bathroom.
Me iré a fin de mes.	I will leave by the end of the month.
En la tarde leí 5 papers, destaqué algunas cosas, etc. Mantengo mi biliografía bien clasificada con citeulike, y no leo casi nada sin agregar después de la lectura un comentario pequeño para no olvidar. En promedio cada paper que escribo tiene 25-35 referencias y es difícil acordarse de todas.	In the afternoon I read 5 papers, I highlighted some stuff, etc. I keem my bibliography well classified with citeulike and I don't read anything without adding a small comment after reading so I not forget. On average, every paper I write has 25-35 references and it is hard to remember them all.
Mañana domingo voy a la U de nuevo, no pienso pasar un día entero en mi pieza.	Tomorrow, sunday, I will go to the University again, I do not want to spend a whole day again in my room.

La U estaba cerrada, y no hay ningún guardia los domingo, como pude averiguar, así que me dediqué a caminar, fui a un parque gigante y muy bonito que se llama Villa Borghese, es realmente enorme, como 2-3 Parcs de la Ciutadella, como del tamaño del Parque O'Higgins en Santiago. I went to a giant park called Villa Borghese, it is really big, like 2-3 Parcs de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, about the size the Parque Ohiggings in Santiago.
Después a Internet un rato y encontre el sitio expatsinitaly.com y stranierienitalia.com. El primero me tranquilizó mucho, todos coincidían en que los Italianos son geniales muy buenas personas pero que las cosas no funcionan, tanto en servicios privados como públicos. En general en todas las oficinas atienden mal, no cumplen con lo pactado, se demoran más de la cuenta, etc.	Afterwards to the Internet for a while, and I found the sites expatsinitaly.com and stranieriinitalia.com. The first eased me a lot, everybody was telling the same, that Italian are great people but that things just don't work, in both private and public services. In a certain sense, that is exactly how things are in Chile, but in Chile I know more or less how to behave. For instance "do not step on the grass" in Chile means that if there is a small fence around the grass you shouldn't step on the grass. In Spain in general it means that you shouldn't step on the grass unless it's a Sunday. In Japan it means that nobody steps in the grass ever. In Italy, I still have to find out ...
Dan un programa en la radio que se llama "Hola mi gente", es un programa en castellano pero cuando entrevistan a un italiano le hablan en Italiano; y es sobre temas relacionados con la inmigración. Por ejemplo hoy es sobre que en muchos otros países europeos, el inmigrante no-nacionalizado después de varios años en el país puede votar (sin necesidad de cambiar de nacionalidad) y algunos quieren introducir esa posibilidad también en Italia.	There is a program in the radio called "Hola mi gente" (hello my people), it is a program in spanish but when they interview an italian they speak to him in italian; and it is about immigration-related issues. For instance today is about the fact that in many other european countries, a non-nationalized immigrant can after some years in the country vote (without changing his nationality) and they want to have that possibility in italy.
El último atado que tuve con mi casero es que en la mañana freí un huevo y me dijo que el olor lo molesta en la mañana, y que no puedo cocinar en la mañana ni freír nada en la mañana. Lo que pasa es que trabaja de noche, de 23:00 a 06:00 todos los días. También que quiere que no me duche por las mañanas, sino por las noches solamente. Y después de una larga discusión por último que si no me gusta me vaya a otro departamento.	The last problem I had with the landlord was that in the morning I fried an egg and he told me that the smell bothers him in the morning, and that I cannot cook in the morning. The thing is that he works at night, from 23.00 to 06.00 every day. He also doesn't want me to take a shower in the morning, but at night only. And after a long discussion he told me that if I didn't like it I can go to another place.

Averigué algo bueno de la inmigración Italiana, y es que incluso un ilegal o indocumentado tiene derecho a atención de urgencia en los hospitales, me imagino que el olor a inmigrante muerto en la calle es muy ofensivo para el olfato de las autoridades.	I found out today a good thing about italian immigration, and it is that even an illegal or an indocumented has the right to have medical aid in case of an emergency in hospital, I imagine that the smell of dead immigrant is too ofensive in the street to authorities' noses.
Estoy averiguando los parámetros que requiere el departamento que arriende para que Fabiola pueda reagruparse conmigo acá. En otras comunas, se piden o 2 habitaciones (sin contar baño y cocina) o 45 metros cuadrados. Acá en Roma, todavía no lo sé. El punto es que tengo que arrendar algo para lo que pueda obtener el certificado de idonedad de alojamiento.	I am finding out what are the parameters that the apartment requires so Fabiola can join with me here. In other counties, they ask for 2 rooms (besides kitchen and bathroom), or for 45 square meters minimum. Here in Rome, I still don't know. The thing is, I have to rent something with certain characteristics, so I can get a certificate.
En la Universidad salí a almorzar con el grupo de profesores y estudiantes de doctorado, fue entretenido, son bastantes y espero integrarme con ellos con el tiempo. Además estoy agendando una charla para el grupo de trabajo, para mostrar lo que yo hago y buscar posibilidades de investigación conjunta.	At university I had lunch with a group of professors and PhD students, it was fun, they are a large lot and I hope to be part of this group with time. I am also scheduling a talk for the workgroup, to show what I do and try to find possibilities of joint research.

A las 09.00 horas estaba en la fila para el Codice Fiscale, otra etapa en la maratón burocrática de los últimos días. El Codice Fiscale es equivalente al NIA de España, al SSN de USA o al RUT de Chile, con la diferencia de que es una función de hashing del nombre, apellido, ciudad y fecha de nacimiento, así que lo puede calcular uno mismo con varios programas o páginas Web disponibles.	At 09.00am I was in the queue for the Codice Fiscale, another stage in the bureaucratic marathon of the last days. The Codice Fiscale is the equivalent of the NIA of Spain, the SSN of USA or the RUT of Chile, with the difference that here it is a hash function of the name, birth date and city, so you can calculate it yourself with several available programs or Web pages.
El problema es que hay que ir a la central porque ocasionalmente se pueden generar dos Codici Fiscali idénticos y en tal caso hay que desambiguar cambiando un número. El trámite fue rápido, el problema es que esta oficina queda muy, muy en las afueras de Roma, a 1 hora de donde vivo yo. Nota para los chilenos: para la obtención del codice fiscale no es necesario presentar nada, sólo el pasaporte con un visado válido. Para otros países hay que presentar otros papeles a veces, depende del país y como todo, no lo sabes hasta que no vas a la oficina y preguntas.	The problem is that you have to go to the central because ocasionally two identical Codici Fiscali can be generated and they have to be deambiguated by changing a name. O sea, no hay requisito para mí, pero igual tengo que conseguirme una planimetría del lugar donde arriende o algo donde aparezca cuantos metros cuadrados para que ellos certifiquen que es suficiente para mi y para Fabi (considerando que en Barcelona vivíamos en 28 mq sin tanto drama).	They guy answered: for 3 persons it is 45 to 60 square meters in Rome. An for 1-2 persons? Up to 45 sq.m. So there is no lower bound for me, but I still have to get a blueprint of the place I rent or some official paper with the size of the apt. So they can certify for how many people the apt. is for (considering that with Fabiola we lived in 28sq. m. without problems in Barcelona).
Después con el codice fiscale al banco para abrir una cuenta corriente, y me dijeron que volviera el jueves y me la tendrían lista. Echará de menos a la panterita pero tiene a las otras dos gatas esperándola allá en San Vicente :-) Ojalá esté bien en Chile y disfrute con su familia y luego la veré acá en Italia! El dueño de casa me prestó desde el primer día unos platos y unos servicios para que los usuara yo, que tengo que dejar en una esquina de la cocina y no mezclar con los demás platos. Pero tuve que comprar mi propia esponja para lavarlos y mi propio detergente, que no puedo dejar en el fregadero sino en una bolsa. Puse uno de mis platos en el microondas y se quebró con el calor. Mañana tengo que comprar uno de repuesto, dejé el plato roto con una nota de que lo reemplazaría.	The landlord lend me from the first day some plates and stuff so i can use it, but I have to left them in a corner of the kitchen and don't mix them with the rest of the cooking stuff. But I had to buy my own sponge and soap for washing the dishes, that I can't leave by the stuff to wash the dishes but in a plastic bag at the side. I put one of my plates in the microwave and it was broken due to heat. Tomorrow I have to buy a new one, I left the broken plate with a note saying that I'll replace it.

Cuando llegué a casa había un plato plástico tipo cumpleaños con una nota que decía que podía usar ese plato mientras reponía el que había quebrado. Que amable.	When I got home there was a cheap plastic plate with a note telling that I could use that plate while I buy a replacement. Very kind.

Hoy una nueva decepción en el banco, no tenían listos mis papeles de la cuent corriente y tuve que esperar más o menos media hora mientras los hacían. Puse algo de dinero en la cuenta, 150 euros, pero no me darán una tarjeta de la cuenta corriente hasta que no me depositen el sueldo de la universidad.	Today a new disapointment in the bank, they didn't have my papers ready and I had to wait about half an hour while they filled in forms. I putted some money in the account, 150 euros, but they won't give me a card for withdrawing money until the university deposits my salary.
Que!? Dije yo. Lo que pasa es que la tarjeta es de credito y debito. Les explique como pude que no quiero credito que quiero solo una de débito. Me dijeron que entonces sólo podría usar la tarjeta en los cajeros del mismo banco y que se demoraban 20 días en tenerla. Les dije que OK, la solicié y dije que volvería en 20 días. Me dijeron que llamara primero para ver si estaba lista.	What?! I said. The thing is that the card is both debit and credit. I explained them that I don't want the credit, I want just debit. They told me that then they will give me a card that was only for the ATMs of the bank, and that they took 20 days to have it. I said OK, I requested it and I said I'll be back in 20 days. They told me to call first to see if it is ready.
Así que ahora tengo cuenta acá en Italia pero para sacar y poner dinero tengo que ir al banco. Que bancos más de mierda. En Chile se demoran más o menos una semana. En España, 1 día. Acá, 20 días en darme una tarjeta que ni siquiera va a estar integrada a la red de cajeros! Para ser justos, en Chile también es dificilísimo abrir una cuenta para un extranjero y el resultado es insatisfactorio.	So now I have an account in Italy but to withdraw money I have to go to the bank. What a crap of banks they have. In Chile they take about 1 week for giving you the card (which can be debit-only, but integrated to the ATM network, if you want). In Spain, 1 day. Here, 20 days but for giving me a card that is not going to be integrated to the ATM network! To be fair, in Chile it is also very hard for a foreinger to open a bank account and the result is unsatisfactory.
Tuve otra discusión larga con el casero y le dije que quería irme antes de mes y que quería que me devolviera el dinero. Le propuse irme el 23, una semana antes. Me mandó a la chucha pero le insistí que no estaba bien, etc., y deció en permitirme que me duchara en la mañana. Y me voy a fin de mes, así que ahora está todo conversado.	I had another long argument with the landlord and I told him I wanted to leave before the end of the month and that I wanted part of my money back. I suggested to leave on the 23rd, a week before normal. He send me to hell but I insisted that the place was not ok, etc... and he decided to allow me to take a shower in the morning, if I don't make noise. And I'm leaving at the end of the month, so everything is settled OK.
Estoy aprendiendo a discutir, y a ser menos tímido y más atrevido. B. mi amiga chilena en BCN me dijo que aprendería eso en Italia.	I am learning to have arguments, and to be less shy and bolder. B. my Chilean friend in BCN told me I will learn that in Italy.
El casero volvió 20 minutos después y me dijo que me daría el dinero no usado de vuelta el 23, me mostró sus cuentas y que me devolería el resto no usado. Genial.	The landlord returned 20 minutes after that and told me that he'll give me the unused money back on the 23th, that was the date I proposed. Great.

Ayer visité un departamento muy bonito, y muy pequeño, de un solo ambiente más cocina y baño, en el Trastevere, la parte que más me gusta de Roma, que queda, como su nombre lo indica, detrás del río Tevere. Tiene un aire muy medieval, con empedrados, campanadas, calles estrechas y tortuosas, me encanta. El depto. costaba 1000 euros al mes, pero le ofrecí al dueño arrendar por más tiempo y pagar cada 3 meses, pero 900 euros, y aceptó. Así que probablemente ese sea mi departamento.	Yesterday I visited a very pretty apartment, and quite small, only one (bed)room plus kitchen and bathroom, in the Trastevere, in the part I like the most of Rome, that is, as its name says, behind the Tevere river. It has a very medieval atmosphere, with streets made of rock, bells sounds, narrow and convoluted streets, I love it. The apt. costed 1000 euros per month, but I offered the owner to rent for longer and to pay every 3 months 900 euros, and he accepted. So probably that will be my apartment.
La próxima semana es la última que me quedo aquí, luego iré una semana a Bertinoro, que es muy bonito, a un encuentro muy interesante sobre data mining. Después serán 20 días en Roma, que probablemente sean en un hostel, y luego a vivir en el Trastevere. Después de eso, 20 días más y llegará la mía mamma, la mía sorella, dopo il mio fratello e anche la mía moglie!!	Next week is the last I stay at this house, then I'll go for one week to Bertinoro, which is very pretty, to a very interesting gathering on data mining.
