Society and freedom

“We live in a world in which there are equal opportunities for everyone. Everybody starts at the bottom of the ladder and then goes up by his/her own merits or by the power of fate. Everybody can get to the top of the ladder, and poor people are poor because they do not make the effort. There are rich countries because their people work, and poor countries in which people only sing and dance. And if there is inequality, it is because fate has decided to favor more to some than to the others.”

We dissent. We know that a just world is yet to come. We have been moving towards it for thousands of years, step by step. First the slaves. Then workers. Then women.

But those who have many privileges want to keep them, and make us drag our feet.

We want to stop dragging our feet>>.

We are not saying to take the powerful people out of their homes and hang them in the street. And it is not that some of them do not deserve it. It is because we are no longer stupid.

We will not stop receiving their money. Because that wealth was the fruit of our work, and we cannot live without it.

But we will no longer believe in their lies. Nor in their ghost enemies. Nor in the moral hierarchy of cultures. Nor in good versus the demon. Nor in a thousands threats that claim for their protection.

We will no longer support their wars. Because these are their wars, not ours. Let them go. Let them put their children forward.

We will no longer believe in their lies. We know that in the ladder not all of us start equal. We see this every day. We are not stupid. And that is not the hand of god dividing the goods of the world. It is the abuse committed by those who can abuse and tip the field against everyone else.

The wealth of the world is the fruit of our work. We want our share. A big one. A just one.

We want to create more wealth and to stop misery, but we do not want to let ourselves be blackmailed for those who ask our blood and privileges in exchange of generating wealth with our work.

We want to receive better education. That will make us less dependent. So we will be able to negotiate our share better. So we will not have to give so much to those who organize us, who give orders to us.

That's why the privileged fear universities: because we are teaching people to organize themselves.

We will not let ourselves be used to exploit and make others suffer, not even in exchange for money, not even if that's the usual thing. We will not be one against the other. We have grown.

We are going to be happy. Illegitimate authority makes us suffer. Seeing privileges unfairly earned make us suffer. Misery makes us suffer. Absurd prohibitions make us suffer. Pollution makes us suffer. Fear and war make us suffer.

We have been selling out in exchange of order and security. We are learning to organize ourselves. We can do it. And we will not pay for protection. We will not repeat the stupidity of a war between continents, between cultures. We will not accept it.

They believe that without fear we will not work. This is not true. We work because we want to be more, because everyone wants to be more. Otherwise, there would not be so many students.

They believe that without prohibitions our pleasures will entrap us. Do not worry for us. We have grown.

We will not allow power to keep on concentrating. And we are not only speaking of official leaders. We know they are there just to attract the bullets in case something goes wrong. We are speaking about those who have the money.

We will not allow the power to keep on concentrating, and to do so, we are going to create knowledge and art for everyone. We will grow by creating abundance, not by creating scarcity for the benefit of a few.

Every one of the things we need, will carry more knowledge and art, and less land and money. The freer the knowledge and art, the less valuable money will be, and the more abundant things will be.

And we will grow together until we no longer need to accept the blackmail of a few.

And we will grow together until we can enjoy that wealth.

And we will do it, we are doing it, in a few generations. We will do it fast, because we can not keep on waiting. We will not drag our feet anymore. We will not let the past prevent us from going to the future.

In a few more years our species will reach a population peak and then it will return to a population level that will be more appropriate to the size and resources of our planet.

In the meantime, we will not let our wealth in the hands of a few. We will do it by sharing with others what we have learned. We will do it without pause, without delay, without dragging our feet.

We will move on together learning how to organize ourselves, demanding what is ours and making ourselves freer. As we are doing now. As we have always do.

Existen 61 tipos de persona de acuerdo a la clasificación usada por Mosaic-UK de Experian. Los tipos principales mezclan aspectos económicos y culturales muy interesantes. Estos tipos son mucho más detallados que la típica definición de clases sociales que se usa en Chile (A=ricos, B=profesionales, C-D=técnicos, E=obreros, F=pobres) siendo ABC1 en nuestro caso el segmento a que la mayoría del marketing apunta.

La lista de 61 perfiles de Mosaic-UK, junto con estadísticas de cuántos votantes/compradores hay en cada grupo, dónde están y cómo convencerlos, es usada por políticos, marketeros, y cualquiera que quiera vender algo y quiera saber cómo y a quién dirigirse.

Los grupos Mosaic más básicos son estos:

• Grupo A: Símbolos de éxito.
• Grupo B: Familias felices.
• Grupo C: Comodidad en los suburbios.
• Grupo D: Comunidades pequeñas.
• Grupo E: Inteligencia urbana.
• Grupo F: Al borde de la seguridad social.
• Grupo G: Viviendo de la municipalidad.
• Grupo H: Empresarios de cuello azul.
• Grupo I: Subsistencia en la penumbra.
• Grupo J: Perspectivas grises.
• Grupo K: Aislamiento rural.

La lista completa está en un documento que se puede descargar de Mosaic UK. Es sorprendente (y sí, un poco decepcionante) ver que todos podemos ser encasillados en 61 clases bastante claras.

Por ejemplo, estuve buscando donde entraríamos mi esposa y yo en la lista, y creo que sería dentro del tipo E, probablemente el tipo E28: mezcla contra-cultural. Profesionales jóvenes viviendo en el centro de las ciudades, con tendencias políticas de izquierda, gastando más que ahorrando, con un cierto desprecio por la cultura de consumo masivo, construyendo su propia identidad, y por tanto en tránsito, etc.:

Counter Cultural Mix is a mix of young urban professionals, many with left wing sympathies, people of Caribbean and Bangladeshi origin, recently arrived Hispanics and a residual population of old people often living in small pockets of housing association or council owned accommodation.

Consumer Values

Many people in Counter Cultural Mix have, for one reason or another, rejected conventional consumerist values. This includes rejection of the political system, rejection of standard family values and the rejection of the conventional materialist lifestyles that most marketing communications promote. This rejection can result in apathy but more often in active engagement in counter cultural activities, hence the success of The Big Issue. Clearly not everyone is these neighbourhoods shares this orientation but it is does affect a large enough minority to have a major influence on local business.

Consumption Patterns

Counter Cultural Mix represents a poor market for most mass-market consumer propositions but offers significant opportunities in the entertainment and leisure sector, particularly for avant-garde films and radical artistic enterprises.

They also enjoy spending money and may not always think too carefully about spending, especially when tempted by new offers or when using credit cards. They may well over-stretch themselves to satisfy their hunger for life; whether that be funding a full and varied social life in the trendy bars, cafes and pubs where they like to hang out with their friends or, perhaps on a larger scale, funding foreign travel and holidays off the beaten track to exotic destinations. Spending rather than saving seems to be the norm here. They are unlikely to have savings and investments, although they may be starting to pay attention to financial products with an eye to the longer term future.

Estuve mirando las otras clases para ver el futuro que podría o querría tener. Convertirse en un E31 parece probable en el corto plazo. En el largo plazo, probablemente termine convertido en un A5 o A6 y con suerte en un A2. Quién sabe.

Los chilenos somos descendientes de una colonia española pobre y lejana, parcialmente hibridados con una raza taciturna que atesoraba una abundante pobreza. De ese cruce salió un pueblo con una tendencia genética hacia el gris y el azul marino. La bendición de Chile es la sobriedad de los borrachos silenciosos en los pueblos, la timidez del cumbianchero mirándose los zapatos en las fiestas, las mujeres que se tapan la boca al reír.

La parte más poblada de Chile no es suficientemente fría como para que el viento polar frague un temperamento fuerte y trabajador. Tampoco es lo suficientemente cálida como para llenar de guirnaldas de flores las calles y reír bajo un sol sabrosón. No somos ni sobrios ni festivos, ni fuertes ni felices.

Los españoles que llegaron al Chile prehistórico no encontraron riquezas reales ni imaginarias. Masticaron arena caliente en el desierto y bebieron hielo frío en las montañas. Volvieron rotos y sin nada que ofrecer, salvo tierra, y más tierra. Los ex-dueños de esa tierra fueron guerrilla entre los árboles. Las araucarias los protegieron por un tiempo. La lección histórica fue el triunfo del que roba, y la borrachera amarga del que mira lo suyo desde lejos.

Los nuevos dueños de la tierra pronto fueron nuevos ricos y se envalentonaron. Nuestra primera declaración de independencia duró la suma de lo que tarda en ir una carta y en volver un ejército de ocupación. La ocupación duró lo que demoraron en ayudarnos los Argentinos. Nuestra amista y lealtad con ellos no duró mucho tampoco.

No somos cobardes, pero somos un pueblo que exalta el valor moral de la medianez. Porque al que llega al último le llegan palos, y el que termina primero recibe trabajo de más. Cultivamos los logros pequeños. Cada niño chileno sabe que la canción nacional es la segunda mejor canción del mundo, despues de la Marsellesa, y aprende a declamarlo con orgullo. Eso es ser patriota para nosotros, y tratar a los Europeos rubios con deferencia y a los nortinos cholos con desprecio. Ese es nuestro camino hacia la grandeza.

Seguro ahora estás esperando que concluya con algo bueno para Chile.

Pero ahora no tengo nada más que decir. Si naciste en Chile es por una rara casualidad, porque es 100 veces más probable nacer en China.

En mi vida personal, creo que fue bueno para mí haber nacido en Chile. Me encanta, por ejemplo, estar casado con una chilena excepcional, que si no fuera chilena no sería tan excepcional (creo yo).

Me gusta también el hecho de que si hubiera nacido en un país más pobre, tal vez no hubiera podido dedicar 10 años a la universidad, y si hubiera nacido en un país más rico, tal vez no hubiera querido hacerlo ;-)

Tal vez el problema es que me eduqué de pequeño durante la dictadura, y por lo tanto, durante en un período muy nacionalista en que el sistema educativo nos vendía cuentos muy fantasiosos. Estoy seguro de que el 90% de los chilenos sigue creyendo en la existencia de la "antártica chilena", o en el cuento de la canción nacional, o de que Chile ganó el concurso de banderas, etc. Pero no es eso lo que me motivó a escribir.

Lo que me avergüenza de veras, es el trato que dan los chilenos en general a los peruanos, bolivianos, ecuatorianos, argentinos, y como contrasta con como tratan a los gringos, alemanes, etc. Me da vergüenza ajena el trato que tienen los nuevos ricos chilenos hacia ellos. Creo que ese es el principal contexto de mi crítica, pero no, no estoy ni abandonando Chile, ni nada por pasarme un par de años afuera -- sería absurdo. Lo que digo es que no hay honor en menospreciar a los otros países, e intento darle un cierto sentido de realidad a la nueva posición de Chile en latinoamérica.

Update 30 de Mayo del 2007: Para dar un poco de contexto a este artículo, ahora que ya pasó el revuelo. Lo escribí en respuesta a una noticia que ví sobre racismo en Chile, en que se hablaba del trato que se da a peruanos y bolivianos en mi país.
